19th-Century Hand-Coloured Lithograph of Mounted Combat with Spear and Sword

About the Item

19th-Century Hand-Coloured Lithograph of Mounted Combat with Spear and Sword This original hand-coloured lithograph, produced in 1842, provides a vivid and dynamic glimpse into the world of medieval or Renaissance-inspired mounted combat. It hails from the celebrated publication *Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums*, published in Stuttgart by Carl Hoffmann. Conceived under the artistic supervision of Friedrich Martin von Reibisch and enriched by the historical commentary of Dr. Franz Kottenkamp, this work aimed to bring to life the customs, costumes, and martial traditions of European chivalry and courtly warfare. In this scene, three horsemen engage in a tense encounter. Two of the riders, clad in distinctive green and red attire, wield a long spear—perhaps a cavalry lance—while the third combatant raises a sword, prepared to defend himself. The horses, depicted with careful anatomical precision and subtle shading, reflect the lithographer’s skill and attention to detail. Each figure’s clothing and harness adornments, highlighted in vibrant hand-applied colours, speak to the period’s taste for both practicality and pageantry. The lithograph remains in very good condition for its age. Minor folds, slight toning, and a few scattered spots are visible, all consistent with a well-preserved 19th-century piece. These minor imperfections do not diminish the overall clarity or impact of the composition. This rare print will appeal to collectors of historical costume, medieval pageantry, and early equestrian combat imagery. Its combination of artistry, authenticity, and vivid storytelling makes it an excellent addition to any distinguished collection or curated display focusing on the romanticized past of noble knights and mounted warriors.
