About the Item

19th-Century Lithograph of the Barbary Lioness in a Powerful Standing Pose This striking 19th-century lithograph features the Barbary lioness (De Barbarijsche Leeuwin), depicted in a regal standing posture. Originally published in *De Zoogdieren: afgebeeld en in hunne levenswijze geschetst*, this print captures the lioness’s muscular physique, keen gaze, and distinctive features with remarkable attention to anatomical accuracy. The Barbary lioness (Panthera leo leo), a now-extinct subspecies in the wild, once roamed the forests and mountains of North Africa, particularly in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Unlike the males, Barbary lionesses lacked an extensive mane but possessed a robust, well-defined body adapted for hunting. This subspecies was larger and more powerful than its sub-Saharan relatives, making it a formidable predator. By the mid-20th century, wild Barbary lions had disappeared due to hunting and habitat destruction, with only a handful of individuals surviving in captivity today. Created by C.C. G. Zool. and printed by La Haye & J. L. G. V., this lithograph is an invaluable piece for collectors of antique zoological prints, wildlife enthusiasts, and those interested in historical representations of Africa’s great predators. Keywords: 19th Century, Lithograph, Natural History, Zoology, Barbary Lioness, Atlas Lion, Panthera Leo, African Wildlife, Scientific Illustration, Antique Print, Animal Engraving, Wildlife Art, Taxonomy, Netherlands, La Haye, J.L.G.V. --- Condition Summary: The print is in good condition, with some mild age-related toning and light foxing visible along the margins. The lithographic details remain sharp, particularly in the lioness’s muscular structure and facial expression. The edges show minor irregularities due to historical binding, but there are no major tears or folds. The artwork is well-preserved and remains highly collectible. --- Framing Tips: To showcase this lithograph, use an acid-free mat in a neutral shade such as off-white or cream to enhance the fine details. A dark wooden or black frame will create an elegant contrast, drawing attention to the lioness’s poised stance. UV-protective glass is recommended to prevent fading over time. If displayed alongside other wildlife lithographs, matching frames will help create a refined and cohesive presentation.

19th-Century Lithograph of the Puma and Cheetah in Graceful Stances This exquisite 19th-century lithograph showcases two remarkable big cats: the cougar, or puma (De Couguar of puma), and the cheetah, referred to as the "tiger wolf" (De Tijgerwolf of Gepard). Originally published in *De Zoogdieren: afgebeeld en in hunne levenswijze geschetst*, this illustration captures the physical differences between these two agile predators with remarkable accuracy. The puma (Puma concolor), also known as the mountain lion, is native to the Americas, ranging from Canada to Patagonia. Unlike other big cats, pumas lack the ability to roar, making them more closely related to smaller feline species. They are solitary hunters known for their stealth and adaptability to various terrains, from dense forests to arid deserts. The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus...
