19th-Century Lithograph of Newfoundland and St. Bernard Rescue Dog Barry

About the Item

19th-Century Lithograph of Newfoundland and St. Bernard Rescue Dog Barry This finely detailed 19th-century lithograph features two renowned dog breeds: the Newfoundland dog (De Newfoundlandische hond) and Barry, the legendary St. Bernard from the Great St. Bernard Pass (Barry, de hond van den St. Bernhardsberg). Originally published in *De Zoogdieren: afgebeeld en in hunne levenswijze geschetst*, this print exemplifies early zoological illustrations' commitment to realism and anatomical accuracy. The Newfoundland dog, native to Canada, is famous for its strength, swimming ability, and history of lifesaving rescues. These dogs were originally bred by fishermen for water rescues and heavy labor. Barry, the St. Bernard depicted in the print, is one of the most famous rescue dogs in history. He belonged to the monks of the Great St. Bernard Hospice in the Swiss Alps and is said to have saved over 40 lives in the early 19th century. St. Bernards remain iconic for their heroic role in alpine rescues. Created by C.C. G. Zool. and printed by La Haye & J. L. G. V., this lithograph is an exceptional representation of these noble breeds. It is an excellent piece for collectors of antique canine illustrations, historical animal prints, and dog enthusiasts. Keywords: 19th Century, Lithograph, Natural History, Zoology, Newfoundland Dog, St. Bernard, Barry, Rescue Dog, Scientific Illustration, Antique Print, Animal Engraving, Wildlife Art, Taxonomy, Netherlands, La Haye, J.L.G.V. --- Condition Summary: The print is in good condition, with light age-related toning and some scattered foxing, mostly along the margins. The lithographic details remain sharp, with excellent shading and texture, particularly in the dogs' fur. The edges show minor irregularities due to past binding, but there are no significant tears or creases. The artwork remains well-preserved and suitable for framing. --- Framing Tips: To best showcase this lithograph, use an acid-free mat in a light neutral shade to complement the aged paper. A classic wooden or black frame will provide a refined look, emphasizing the intricate details. UV-protective glass is recommended to prevent fading over time. If displayed with other lithographs of dog breeds or animals, consider using matching frames for a cohesive and elegant presentation.
