About the Item

19th-Century Lithograph of the Puma and Cheetah in Graceful Stances This exquisite 19th-century lithograph showcases two remarkable big cats: the cougar, or puma (De Couguar of puma), and the cheetah, referred to as the "tiger wolf" (De Tijgerwolf of Gepard). Originally published in *De Zoogdieren: afgebeeld en in hunne levenswijze geschetst*, this illustration captures the physical differences between these two agile predators with remarkable accuracy. The puma (Puma concolor), also known as the mountain lion, is native to the Americas, ranging from Canada to Patagonia. Unlike other big cats, pumas lack the ability to roar, making them more closely related to smaller feline species. They are solitary hunters known for their stealth and adaptability to various terrains, from dense forests to arid deserts. The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), the fastest land animal, is native to Africa and parts of Iran. Its slender body, long legs, and specialized muscles allow it to reach speeds of up to 120 km/h (75 mph) in short bursts. Unlike most big cats, the cheetah’s claws are non-retractable, providing extra traction during high-speed chases. In the 19th century, cheetahs were sometimes referred to as "tiger wolves," reflecting their unique blend of feline agility and canine-like hunting strategy. Created by C.C. G. Zool. and printed by La Haye & J. L. G. V., this lithograph is an invaluable piece for collectors of antique zoological prints, wildlife enthusiasts, and those fascinated by early artistic representations of big cats. Keywords: 19th Century, Lithograph, Natural History, Zoology, Puma, Cougar, Mountain Lion, Cheetah, Acinonyx Jubatus, Panthera, Big Cats, Wildlife Art, Scientific Illustration, Antique Print, Animal Engraving, Taxonomy, Netherlands, La Haye, J.L.G.V. --- Condition Summary: The print is in good condition, with some mild age-related toning and minor foxing along the margins. The lithographic details remain crisp, capturing the sleek form of the cheetah and the powerful stance of the puma. The edges show slight irregularities due to historical binding, but no major tears or folds are present. The artwork is well-preserved and remains highly collectible. --- Framing Tips: For an elegant presentation, use an acid-free mat in a neutral shade, such as off-white or light beige, to enhance the lithograph’s details. A dark wooden or black frame will provide a striking contrast, drawing attention to the natural grace of these two big cats. UV-protective glass is recommended to prevent fading over time. If displayed alongside other wildlife lithographs, matching frames will create a refined and cohesive collection.
