About the Item

Beautiful antique print 1870s subject taken from the work of Alfred De Dreux "heartbreak" important French painter. A sweet girl on horseback holds a love letter in her hand and her sad face tells us that she is suffering. The print was made by Goupil & Cie. The Adolphe Goupil house was founded in 1827s, then in partnership with Henry Rittner in 1829s, when the publisher Adolphe Goupil and the print dealer Henry Rittner met thanks to the intermediation of the seascape painter Charles Mozin and join forces to dedicate themselves to the impression and edition of original prints (etchings and lithographs) at the boulevard Montmartre in Paris. Thanks to Rittner's family, living in Dresden, the company assumed an international reach right from the start. Step by step, it has developed a worldwide market for reproductions of paintings and sculptures: a network with branches in London, Brussels, The Hague, Berlin and Vienna, as well as in New York and Australia. Such a great expansion is determined by the photographic studios and by the first laboratory set up in 1869s in Asnières, then a small village north of Paris. The creator of the innovative system of dissemination of the work of art was Adolphe Goupil (1806s–1893s), assisted by his daughter Marie, married to the artist Jean-Léon Gérôme. Adolphe Goupil who, from initial manufacturer, publisher and merchant of prints, becomes the client - buyer of expensive paintings, created exclusively to be reproduced, with the most modern printing techniques, in different formats in order to satisfy the needs of the small and middle class whose economic status is not yet sufficiently consolidated to be able to support the purchase of an original painting. The Maison Goupil of Paris, with its numerous branches opened in the main European and overseas cities, thus becomes a sort of arbiter elegantiae and dictator of bourgeois taste in full Belle Époque atmosphere.
