About the Item
Alpine Violet and Red Calandrinia hand coloured botanical print 1874
This finely hand coloured botanical print from 1874 features two striking alpine plants, Viola obliqua and Calandrinia umbellata. It was published in London by George Bell and Sons as part of the second series of Alpine Plants, a renowned Victorian work celebrating the diversity and beauty of mountain flora through detailed lithographs and delicate hand colouring.
At the top left is Viola obliqua, a charming violet species with deep purple petals and heart-shaped, textured leaves. Native to alpine meadows and woodland margins, it is appreciated for its rich colour and graceful habit. The illustration shows the flower in bloom with subtle shading and a naturalistic pose that gives it lifelike charm and depth.
To the right is Calandrinia umbellata, a plant known for its intense magenta to crimson red flowers arranged in small clusters atop a slender, upright stem. Native to Chile and cultivated in rock gardens across Europe, it offers a vivid contrast with its vibrant petals and narrow, grass-like leaves. The hand colouring captures both the boldness of the blossoms and the soft gradients of each flower’s interior.
Lithographed and coloured by hand, this plate exemplifies the care and craftsmanship of 19th century botanical publications. The paper is thick and creamy with wide margins and only faint age toning. The colours are exceptionally strong, especially the purple of the violet and the ruby tones of the Calandrinia, which stand out against the neutral background.
This print is ideal for framing and would suit a botanical-themed interior, a study or garden room. It also makes a refined gift for collectors of antique botanical art or floral enthusiasts.
Condition summary and framing tips:
Very good condition with vivid colours and minor edge wear. Perfect for framing with a soft cream or pale plum mat and a dark wood or bronze frame to enhance the rich tones of both the violet and red blossoms.
