About the Item

Allegorical Tribute to King Willem I of the Netherlands, after Pieneman, 1815 This fine early 19th-century engraving is an allegorical tribute to King Willem I of the Netherlands (1772–1843), commemorating his ascension to the throne in March 1815. The composition, after a painting by the celebrated Dutch history painter Jan Willem Pieneman (1779–1853), presents a richly symbolic scene in which classical allegories, putti, and national emblems celebrate the restored monarchy and the unity of the Dutch nation. At the center stands a bust of King Willem I on a pedestal inscribed with his name and title, crowned with a laurel wreath by cherubs. To the right, a female figure in classical armor—an embodiment of the nation—extends a liberty cap and a palm branch, symbols of freedom and victory. At her side rests the powerful Dutch lion, paw placed firmly on a defeated eagle, a clear symbol of triumph over foreign domination. Ships in the background allude to Dutch naval power, while festoons, garlands, and additional putti reinforce the celebratory tone of the work. The print is accompanied by an inscription at the bottom: “Hulde van het Hersteld en Vereenigd Nederland aan Koning Willem den Eerste. Nationaal gedenkstuk van Dank en Kunst” — “Tribute of the Restored and United Netherlands to King Willem the First. National memorial piece of Gratitude and Art.” This engraving is an important historical document, produced in the immediate aftermath of the Napoleonic era, when the Netherlands regained sovereignty and Willem I was inaugurated as king. It captures the patriotic fervor of the time and exemplifies the use of allegorical imagery to reinforce national identity and loyalty to the crown. Condition report: The print is in good condition with a strong impression. Minor toning, faint foxing, and light handling marks are visible in the margins, consistent with age. Wide margins preserved, with the full inscription clear and legible. Plate mark visible. Framing tips: This engraving would display beautifully in a classic gilt frame with a wide ivory mount, echoing the grandeur of the subject. Alternatively, a dark wood frame with subtle gold accents would complement the richness of the allegorical imagery and the strength of the Dutch lion motif. Technique: Engraving Maker: After Jan Willem Pieneman (1779–1853), engraved by Willem van Senus, Netherlands, 1815
