About the Item

Antique Bird Print of Richardson's Skua. This print originates from 'Birds of Britain' by J. Lewis Bonhote. Artists and Engravers: J. Lewis Bonhote was an English ornithologist. Bonhote was born in London and educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was appointed private secretary to the Governor of the Bahamas in 1897, and was sub-director of the Zoological Gardens at Giza from 1913 to 1919. Bonhote was joint secretary (with Ernst Hartert) of the 4th International Ornithological Congress in London in 1905, secretary and treasurer of the Avicultural Society, secretary of the British Ornithologists' Union (1907–1913) and secretary-treasurer of the British Ornithologists' Club (1920–1922). Condition: Very good, with original protection sheet. Please study image carefully. Artists and Engravers: Printed in Stockholm. Magnus von Wright (1805 - 68) was the first taxidermist working with the vertebrate collections of Helsinki University. Starting out as a taxidermist in the 1820's, he stuffed birds for Societas pro Flora et Fauna Fennica, the oldest scientific society in Finland, and in 1845, became taxidermist at the university's zoological museum. Von Wright made several study journeys to Stockholm and St. Petersburg, and even wrote a short manual on how mount birds. Though a skilful taxidermist, his reputation, like that of his two brothers, Wilhelm and Ferdinand, rests on his skill as a zoological illustrator.
