About the Item

Antique Botanical Prints of Curly Palm, Spiny Date Palm & Trachycarpus – c.1897 Description: A striking set of three antique botanical prints depicting elegant palm species, produced around 1897. The set includes the Curly Palm (Howea belmoreana), the Spiny Date Palm (Phoenix spinosa), and the young Trachycarpus excelsus, each shown with refined detail and accuracy. These chromolithographs highlight the unique leaf structures and forms of these palms, rendered with rich green tones and subtle shading that emphasize their natural grace. Palms were highly fashionable subjects in late 19th-century botanical illustration, admired for their exotic appeal and association with tropical landscapes. The Curly Palm, native to Lord Howe Island, was especially prized in Victorian conservatories. The Spiny Date Palm, with its sharply defined fronds, evokes the arid landscapes of its origin, while the Trachycarpus excelsus, known as the windmill palm, represents a hardy variety cultivated for its resilience. Together, these plates offer a fascinating glimpse into the horticultural interests of the era. These prints would make an elegant decorative grouping, suitable for framing as a set or displayed individually. Their clean lines and botanical precision make them appealing for both collectors and interior decorators seeking timeless natural history art. Condition: Very good, with only minimal age toning consistent with age. The images remain crisp and vibrant, with no distracting blemishes. The frame is not included. Framing tips: Best presented as a matched trio in slim wooden or gilt frames. Use a soft cream or pale green mat to echo the natural tones and create a harmonious botanical display. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Unknown, c.1897
