About the Item
Antique Engraving of a Leopard (Felis chalybeata Hermann), drawn by Ihle, engraved by Bock, circa 1800
Description:
This finely detailed zoological engraving depicts a leopard identified as Felis chalybeata Hermann, drawn by Ihle and engraved by Bock around 1800. The work originates from one of the great German natural history series of the late 18th to early 19th century, likely associated with Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber’s Die Säugthiere in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen (“Mammals in Illustrations from Nature with Descriptions”).
The leopard is shown standing in profile on a subtly rendered natural ground, its sleek body and patterned coat captured with remarkable precision. Ihle’s drawing demonstrates careful observation of anatomy and posture, while Bock’s delicate engraving transforms the image into a study of strength and elegance. The use of fine linework and soft tonal shading brings depth to the fur and a sense of motion to the stance.
The scientific title, Felis chalybeata Hermann, reflects the early Linnaean classification system as developed and refined by naturalists like Jean-Frédéric Hermann and Schreber. Such works sought to catalog the animal kingdom comprehensively, combining scientific study with artistic excellence. This engraving, with its restrained composition and exacting detail, stands as an example of the Enlightenment’s union of art, science, and curiosity about the natural world.
Condition report:
Good condition with mild age toning and a few small handling marks consistent with age. Clear and sharp impression on laid paper with a distinct plate mark and wide margins. Slight binding traces on the left edge, otherwise very well preserved.
Framing tips:
A soft cream or ivory mat will complement the aged paper tone. A dark wood or black frame will emphasize the fine linework, while a walnut frame offers a warmer, natural presentation ideal for study or library interiors.

19th-Century Lithograph of the Puma and Cheetah in Graceful Stances
This exquisite 19th-century lithograph showcases two remarkable big cats: the cougar, or puma (De Couguar of puma), and the cheetah, referred to as the "tiger wolf" (De Tijgerwolf of Gepard). Originally published in *De Zoogdieren: afgebeeld en in hunne levenswijze geschetst*, this illustration captures the physical differences between these two agile predators with remarkable accuracy.
The puma (Puma concolor), also known as the mountain lion, is native to the Americas, ranging from Canada to Patagonia. Unlike other big cats, pumas lack the ability to roar, making them more closely related to smaller feline species. They are solitary hunters known for their stealth and adaptability to various terrains, from dense forests to arid deserts.
