About the Item

Title: Antique Hand-Colored Engraving of the Bald Coot by E. Albin, circa 1730 Description: This striking antique hand-colored engraving depicts the Bald Coot, titled Fulica, from the early 18th-century ornithological work by Eleazar Albin. The print shows the bird standing on a grassy rock ledge beside a body of water, rendered in rich tones of black, grey, and muted green. The engraving is captioned with the Latin name Fulica and the English common name The Bald Coot. The lower left bears the artist’s name, E. Albin del., confirming it as part of Albin’s important series on birds. Eleazar Albin (circa 1690–1742) was a notable natural history illustrator and author, known for his publications including A Natural History of Birds. His works were among the earliest English ornithological publications to include detailed hand-colored engravings drawn directly from nature, admired for both their scientific accuracy and their artistic style. The coot is depicted with naturalistic attention to plumage texture, webbed feet, and its characteristic white facial shield. The clear linear border surrounding the composition is typical of early 18th-century English natural history prints. Such engravings were made primarily for educated collectors, early ornithologists, and wealthy patrons with an interest in natural sciences. Today, prints by Eleazar Albin remain highly sought after for their historical value, rarity, and their role in the development of ornithological illustration. They provide insight into early scientific study as well as aesthetic traditions of the Enlightenment period. Condition report: The print is in good condition considering its age. There is some toning and light foxing in the margins. The engraved image remains strong with vivid hand coloring. There are minor edge nicks and a faint fold in the left margin, not affecting the image area. Framing tips: This engraving would look elegant in a classic black or dark wood frame with a gold inner edge to echo the print’s historical nature. Use a light cream or antique white mat to highlight the detailed coloring and maintain a refined, museum-quality presentation suitable for a library, study, or natural history collection display.

Antique Bird Print of the Eurasian or Australian Coot by Albin, c.1738
By Eleazar Albin
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique print titled 'Cotee - Fulica'. Old bird print of the Eurasian coot. The Eurasian coot (Fulica atra), also known as the common coot, or Australian coot, is a member of the rail and crake bird family, the Rallidae. It is largely black except for the white frontal shield (which gave rise to the phrase "as bald as a coot", in use as early as 1430). This print originates from 'The Natural History of Birds' by E. Albin. This is the rarest and most highly prized of Albin’s works as it was hand coloured entirely by Albin and his daughter, Elizabeth. There were only 89 sets published. Artists and Engravers: Eleazar Albin was a German professional painter who settled in England in 1707, where he married and raised a family, changing his name from Weiss to Albin. He illustrated works on insects and spiders, earning his living by making watercolors of the collections of wealthy patrons, including Sir Hans Sloane...

Hand-Colored Engraving of the Small Brown and White Duck by Seligmann, c.1770
Located in Langweer, NL
Title: Die Kleine Braune und Weiße Ente - Hand-Colored Engraving of the Small Brown and White Duck by Johann Michael Seligmann, 18th Century This elegant hand-colored engraving, titled *Die Kleine Braune und Weiße Ente*, portrays the Small Brown and White Duck (*Anas Canadensis minor fulcus*) resting gracefully on calm waters. This artwork is part of Johann Michael Seligmann’s *Sammlung verschiedener ausländischer und seltener Vögel* (Collection of Various Foreign and Rare Birds), a monumental series that translated the illustrations of renowned naturalists, such as George Edwards, into stunning prints for an 18th-century audience. The plate, numbered "Tab. LII," captures the bird’s fine plumage details, with deep brown tones and subtle white highlights rendered through meticulous hand-coloring. The serene water and minimalistic background enhance the focus on the duck, while the French title, *Le Petit Canard Brun et Blanc*, underscores the historical importance of the engraving as a study of North American avifauna. This piece is ideal for collectors of historical ornithological prints or enthusiasts of 18th-century natural history illustrations. Seligmann’s dedication to scientific accuracy and aesthetic beauty is evident, making this print of the Small Brown and White Duck a delightful addition to any collection of antique bird engravings.
