Antique Handcolored Engraving of Aphids and Related Small Insects, c.1800

About the Item

Antique Handcolored Engraving of Aphids, Insects XI, c.1800 This original handcolored copperplate engraving illustrates various species of aphids and related small insects, highlighting their intricate anatomy and ecological significance. This engraving originates from Friedrich Johann Bertuch’s *Bilderbuch für Kinder* (Picture Book for Children), a 12-volume natural history encyclopedia published between 1790 and 1830, celebrated for its detailed zoological depictions. The engraving includes: 1. A magnified aphid (*Aphidoidea*), showcasing its body structure and siphoning mouthparts (Fig. 1). 2. A group of aphids clustered on a leaf, demonstrating their symbiotic relationship with plants (Fig. 2). 3. A microscopic view of aphid eggs, emphasizing their reproductive cycle (Fig. 3). 4. A larger winged aphid, illustrating its dispersal adaptations (Fig. 4). 5. A tree hopper (*Membracidae*), noted for its ornate head and leaf-like camouflage (Fig. 5). 6. A cicada nymph (*Cicadoidea*), highlighting its distinctive exoskeleton (Fig. 6). 7. A circular depiction of mites and aphids in their natural habitats, emphasizing their abundance and ecological interactions (Fig. 7). This vivid engraving captures the diversity of small insects and provides an educational glimpse into 19th-century entomology. It is ideal for collectors of natural history art or antique entomological illustrations. Condition Report Good condition. Age-related toning, minor edge wear, no text on verso.
