About the Item
Set of 3 antique orchid lithographs – Phalaenopsis, Vanda & Aerides, 1897
This set of three original hand-colored lithographs presents some of the most exotic orchids admired by Victorian collectors. Published in 1897 in Edward Step’s Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse, these plates combine botanical accuracy with artistic charm and remain among the most decorative late 19th-century orchid illustrations.
The first plate depicts Phalaenopsis schilleriana, known for its cascading sprays of pink flowers and beautifully mottled foliage. Native to the Philippines, it became one of the most prized orchids in Victorian greenhouses and continues to be a favorite among modern orchid lovers. The second plate illustrates Vanda tricolor, a spectacular orchid from Java with upright stems, long strap-like leaves, and striking flowers patterned with brown and purple spots against a creamy background. The third plate shows Aerides lawrenceae, a Philippine orchid producing dramatic clusters of greenish-white blooms flushed with rose, famed for its fragrance and dramatic presentation.
Together, these lithographs capture the height of orchid mania, when species from Asia were imported to Europe and cultivated in glasshouses as rare treasures. Today, they are sought after both for their beauty and their historical importance in the history of horticulture and botanical art.
Condition report:
Very good condition. Strong impressions and bright original hand-coloring preserved. Some light marginal toning and faint foxing typical of the period, not affecting the images. Wide margins intact with visible plate marks. Sold as prints - not in frame or matting board.
Framing tips:
These prints are especially striking when framed as a coordinated trio. A cream or ivory mat enhances the colors, while slim black or dark wood frames add elegance. A double mat with a fine green or rose accent line can subtly echo the orchids’ natural tones.
