About the Item
Antique print titled 'Neuirrland, Bewohner v. Hafen Carteret'. Male native of the Bismarck Archipelago, seated on an overgrown rock, two fellow tribesmen on the right, one with a plaited mat over his head. The port of Carteret was on the southern tip of the island of New Ireland, named after the discoverer (1767) of the canal separating New Britannia from New Ireland.
Lithographed by Honegger. Most likely originates from an edition of 'Naturgeschichte und Abbildungen der Menschen und der Säugethiere' by R. Schinz. Published circa 1840.
