About the Item
Antique Biblical Engravings – Dance of Salome & Beheading of John the Baptist, Pieter Mortier, ca. 1700
This dramatic copperplate engraving, published by Pieter Mortier in Amsterdam around 1700, unites two pivotal episodes from the Gospels that center on the fate of John the Baptist. The Baroque style of these works is immediately apparent in the theatrical settings, expressive gestures, and stark contrasts of light and shadow, all reinforcing the gravity of the biblical narrative.
The upper engraving depicts the Dance of Salome (Matthew 14:6–11). In a richly ornamented interior, Salome performs before Herod Antipas and a lavishly assembled court. The scene captures the moment that Herod, enthralled by Salome’s dance, promises her anything she desires. Guided by her mother Herodias, she demands the head of John the Baptist. The grandeur of the hall, the intricate costumes, and the animated movement of the dancers and onlookers emphasize both decadence and looming tragedy.
The lower scene presents the Beheading of John the Baptist (Mark 6:27–28). A powerful executioner, sword in hand, displays John’s severed head to the soldiers and attendants waiting with a platter. The grim prison interior, complete with barred windows and chains, underlines the brutality of the moment. John’s lifeless body lies stretched across a rough bed, contrasting sharply with the triumphant gesture of the executioner.
Together, the engravings illustrate not only the fulfillment of Salome’s fateful request but also the contrast between worldly indulgence and prophetic sacrifice. These plates were part of Mortier’s ambitious illustrated Bible, a monumental work that paired scripture with large-scale engravings for study and devotion.
Condition: Crisp, detailed impressions on laid paper with full margins. Light toning, minor spots, and slight edge wear consistent with age. Verso blank.
Framing tips: Best preserved together as issued, with a vertical mount highlighting both engravings. A cream or light ivory mat will soften the strong contrasts, while a black or walnut frame will enhance the solemnity of the subject. A thin gilt liner may be used for a refined, devotional finish.
