About the Item

Antique View of Amsterdam Naval Arsenal, Hand-Colored Lithograph c.1850 Description: This finely hand-colored 19th-century lithograph titled 'Magazyn der Marine / L’Amirauté' presents a dignified and historically significant view of the *'s Lands Zeemagazijn*, the Dutch naval storehouse and shipyard on the eastern waterfront of Amsterdam. The print was drawn by the acclaimed Dutch artist Cornelis Springer, lithographed by T. Fontaine, and published by the respected firm Frans Buffa & Zonen in Amsterdam. The scene depicts the impressive naval arsenal building—constructed between 1655 and 1656 by architect Daniël Stalpaert—as seen from across the water, with a serene sky, sailing ships, and rowboats animating the foreground. The calm water reflects the monumental facade of the arsenal, emphasizing the symmetry and classical proportions of this iconic Dutch Baroque structure. Located near the current Scheepvaartmuseum (Maritime Museum), the *Magazyn der Marine* served as a vital hub for the Dutch navy, housing sails, ropes, and weapons. In this lithograph, the artist captures both the functional maritime setting and the architectural grandeur of the building, framed by the quiet industry of 19th-century naval life. The balance between human activity, water, and classical architecture is enhanced by soft hand-coloring in earthy ochres, cool greys, and delicate pastels. Springer's architectural precision, combined with Fontaine’s lithographic finesse and Buffa’s high publishing standards, make this print a superb collector’s item. It appeals to those interested in maritime history, Dutch naval architecture, or the visual heritage of Amsterdam. A distinguished piece suitable for historical collections or as an elegant wall feature in interiors with nautical, classical, or Dutch decorative themes. Condition report: Very good condition. Vibrant hand coloring with a clean and crisp impression. Minor toning and a few small spots in the margins. No tears or repairs. Wide margins and strong image area make this a well-preserved 19th-century lithograph. Framing tips (240 characters): Frame in dark walnut or black with gold lining for a nautical or classic finish. Use a soft ivory or light grey mat to draw attention to the architecture. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the color and paper quality.
