About the Item
Armored Knight with Winged Helmet and Flail, circa 1400
This vivid hand-colored engraving from the acclaimed 1845 publication Costumes Historiques des XIIIe, XIVe et XVe Siècles captures the iconic image of a 15th-century European knight in full combat gear. Striking a defensive stance with shield raised and flail poised, this figure conveys the readiness and pageantry of medieval warfare. The print is plate number 82 from the original series and exemplifies the meticulous attention to historical accuracy for which the series is known.
The knight wears articulated plate armor on his limbs, while his upper body is protected by a richly textured orange-brown cuirass reinforced with small studs. A bright green tunic underneath adds an elegant contrast and suggests noble status or livery.
On his head, a silver helm is adorned with dramatic red plumes or wings, a motif common in heraldic or ceremonial display. He grips a long red kite shield decorated with floral or vine motifs, its shape and decoration both functional and symbolic. The flail in his other hand, with its studded head and flexible chain, represents a brutal weapon associated with mounted combat and late-medieval infantry.
This print offers a striking depiction of knightly iconography at the peak of the chivalric age. It would appeal to collectors of medieval arms and armor, historical reenactors, costume designers, or anyone fascinated by the visual culture of pre-Renaissance Europe. The colour scheme is both historically resonant and decoratively pleasing, lending the piece to display in traditional, eclectic, or scholarly settings.
Condition
This print is in very good condition. The paper remains firm and clean, with very minor aging in the margins. The colors are vivid, and the plate impression is crisp and well-defined. There are no tears, repairs, or significant stains in the image area.
Framing tips
This print will look particularly striking in a narrow gold, black, or bronze frame that echoes the tones in the armor and shield. Use an off-white or parchment-colored mat to preserve the historical aesthetic. A deep red mat could also enhance the knight’s vivid accessories and provide a bold presentation. Ideal as a standalone accent in a study, library, or hallway, especially when paired with other military-themed prints from the same series.
