About the Item

Set of 3 Biblical Engravings – St. Mark, Healing Bartimeus & Descent from the Cross This moving trio of antique engravings, published in 1735, illustrates significant episodes from the Gospel of Mark, rendered with spiritual clarity and fine 18th-century engraving technique. Each copperplate engraving offers expressive detail, classical settings, and thoughtful composition. Together, they form a coherent visual narrative of ministry, healing, and sacrifice—ideal for devotional use or a refined collector’s display. The first engraving, from Mark Chapter I, is titled "St. Mark the Evangelist." It portrays Mark standing barefoot upon a classical pedestal, holding a book and gesturing toward heaven with his right hand. A radiant divine light shines above his head, symbolising inspiration from the Holy Spirit. At his feet lies the lion, his traditional symbol, indicating courage and divine authority. The scene is set against a mountainous landscape, emphasising solitude and revelation. The engraving celebrates Mark's role as Gospel writer and messenger. The second engraving, from Mark Chapter X, depicts the miracle of "Blind Bartimeus Cured." The blind man kneels before Christ at the foot of a grand colonnade, reaching out in faith. Christ gently places his hands upon Bartimeus’s eyes, while onlookers—disciples and townspeople—watch with reverence and awe. The background features classical ruins and distant mountains, anchoring the healing in a timeless setting. The composition is dynamic and emotionally rich, capturing the transformative power of faith. The third engraving, from Mark Chapter XV, verse 46, shows the poignant moment of "Christ Taken Down from the Cross." The lifeless body of Christ lies at the foot of the cross, mourned by the Virgin Mary and other women. The empty cross, with a cloth and ladder still in place, looms above. The rocky hilltop setting, coupled with the tender gestures of grief, creates a deeply meditative composition. This scene encapsulates sorrow, sacrifice, and the humanity of Christ’s final moments. Condition summary: All three prints are in fair to good condition. Mild age toning with occasional foxing, especially in the margins. A few faint water stains are visible. No tears or repairs. Each engraving shows a strong impression with excellent line clarity. Paper is firm and stable. Framing tips: This set benefits from presentation in matching black, walnut, or dark oak frames. A cream or soft ivory mat enhances the natural paper tone. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the engravings’ detail and prevent fading. Technique: Engraving Maker: Unknown, European, 1735
