About the Item

Burbot, Ling and Blue Ling - Unique Scandinavian Eel-like Fish Lithograph This stunning 19th-century lithograph from *Skandinaviens Fiskar* features three captivating eel-like fish species from Scandinavian waters: the Burbot (Lota lota), the Ling (Molva molva), and the Blue Ling (Molva dypterygia). Illustrated with scientific accuracy and artistic mastery by Wilhelm von Wright and C. Erdmann, and published by P. A. Norstedt & Söners Förlag in Stockholm, this plate beautifully captures the sinuous elegance and distinct characteristics of these elongated fish. At the top of the print, the Burbot (Lota lota) is depicted with its characteristic serpentine body and ornate mottling of dark brown and yellow patterns. The texture of the fish’s smooth, slippery skin is masterfully rendered, capturing its natural sheen and vibrant hues. A distinct chin barbel gives the Burbot an almost catfish-like appearance. Known as the only freshwater member of the cod family, Burbots inhabit cold rivers and lakes throughout Scandinavia. They are particularly valued for their firm, flavorful flesh and are often sought by ice fishermen during winter months. In the center of the composition lies the Ling (Molva molva), a long and robust fish with a subtly tapering body and prominent lateral line. The brownish-yellow coloration is interspersed with irregular light patches, giving it a marbled appearance. The graceful curvature of the body and the pronounced fins highlight its elongated form. Ling are known for their deep-sea habitats and are prized as a food fish, especially valued in Scandinavian and northern European cuisine. At the bottom of the print is the Blue Ling (Molva dypterygia), which shares a similar elongated form but exhibits a smoother and more uniformly colored body, with subtle shading that transitions from a pale underbelly to a darker back. The elongated dorsal and anal fins run almost the entire length of the body, giving it an eel-like appearance. Blue Ling are typically found at great depths and are known for their mild, delicate flesh. The lithographic technique used in this print combines fine line work with carefully applied hand coloring, creating lifelike depictions that blend scientific precision with artistic beauty. Each fish is rendered with an exceptional eye for detail, capturing both their unique anatomy and natural coloration. Condition report: The print is preserved in excellent condition, with vivid colors and crisp lines that have remained intact over time. Framing tips: To enhance its visual appeal, consider framing it with a dark wood frame and a neutral mat, allowing the earthy tones and intricate patterns to stand out. This lithograph would make an exceptional addition to any natural history collection or maritime-themed interior, celebrating the intriguing diversity of Scandinavian eel-like fish species.
