About the Item
Byzantine Decorative Motifs Print – Antique Lithograph of Religious and Architectural Patterns, c.1869
This richly composed chromolithograph showcases an array of ornamental motifs from the Byzantine tradition, blending sacred symbolism with classical geometry. Plate XXXIII from L'Ornement Polychrome, this sheet illustrates the visual splendor of Eastern Roman religious art and architecture as it flourished from the 4th to 15th century.
The central panel features a procession of angelic figures—haloed seraphim with outstretched wings—framed by scrolling vines and bordered by interlaced floral designs. Above them, a medallion with a blue and gold cross emphasizes the spiritual nature of Byzantine art, where form and ornament served theological purpose. Surrounding elements include interlaced patterns, stylized leaves, geometric knots, rosettes, and mosaic fragments—all adapted from church interiors, manuscript illuminations, and floor mosaics.
Rendered in tones of gold, crimson, blue, emerald, and black, the designs reflect the luxurious materials and intricate craftsmanship typical of Byzantine mosaic, enamel, and textile work. Several panels exhibit cloisonné-like patterns filled with vegetal motifs and repetitive, grid-based arrangements—iconic features of Byzantine liturgical ornament.
Printed in Paris circa 1869 by Firmin-Didot and lithographed by Duran, this plate is part of the celebrated decorative arts series curated by Albert Racinet. The chromolithographic process captures the detailed linework, layered symbolism, and deep jewel-toned colors of Byzantine ecclesiastical aesthetics. Such prints were instrumental in reviving historic styles in 19th-century church design, interior decoration, and illuminated printmaking.
This work serves as a stunning historical reference and decorative object, illustrating the continuity of sacred art and the enduring legacy of Byzantine ornament in Christian architecture.
