About the Item

Byzantine Ornament Print – Antique Lithograph of Architectural and Mosaic Patterns, c.1869 This vibrant chromolithograph presents a dazzling collection of ornamental motifs from the Byzantine tradition, reflecting the opulence and complexity of Eastern Roman design. Plate XXXI from L'Ornement Polychrome, this sheet captures the richly decorated surfaces that adorned the walls, floors, and manuscripts of the Byzantine Empire, spanning from the 4th to the 15th century. The composition is arranged in a grid of square and rectangular sections, each filled with intricate geometric patterns, stylized floral motifs, or symbolic forms. At the center is a large golden cross-shaped layout with circular medallions, rosettes, and mosaic-inspired filigree—typical of ecclesiastical decoration found in Byzantine churches such as those in Ravenna or Constantinople. Bright tones of red, blue, green, and ivory contrast against ochre and gold backgrounds, evoking the shimmering surfaces of mosaic and inlaid stonework. Among the recurring design elements are interlace bands, Greek key patterns, palmettes, stylized grapevines, and animal figures—often used in architectural friezes, floor mosaics, or embroidered vestments. The symmetry, layering, and vivid palette reflect the Byzantine aesthetic ideal of spiritual order and divine light, with ornament used as a conduit to the sacred. Produced in Paris circa 1869 by Firmin-Didot and lithographed by Jetaud after drawings compiled by Albert Racinet, this plate was created using the chromolithographic method, which allowed for faithful replication of complex polychrome surfaces. It became a vital resource for architects and designers during the historicist revival of the 19th century, inspiring Neo-Byzantine elements in church design, stained glass, and applied arts. Condition: Excellent condition. Clean sheet with strong, vibrant colors. Minimal age-toning and a few faint foxing marks in the outer margin. No tears or restorations. Framing tips: Pair with a gold, dark walnut, or bronze frame to echo the classical richness of the motifs. A wide mat in ivory or pale yellow will highlight the print’s colors and central symmetry, enhancing its visual impact. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Firmin-Didot, Paris, after A. Racinet, c.1869
