The Ceremonies of the Low Mass – 1734 Engraving Reflecting the Passion of Christ

About the Item

Title: The Ceremonies of the Low Mass – Rare 1734 Engraving Reflecting the Passion of Christ Description: This rare and intricately detailed 18th-century engraving presents the beginning section of *Les Cérémonies des Petites Messes* (The Ceremonies of the Low Mass), illustrated in thirty-five figures to align each priestly gesture with a corresponding episode from the Passion of Jesus Christ. Published in 1734 as part of *The Ceremonies and Religious Customs of Various Nations of the Known World*, this engraving offers a remarkable visual catechism that blends liturgical instruction with devotional meditation. This sheet—numbered plate 147—is divided into nine rectangular scenes arranged symmetrically around a central title cartouche. Each vignette pairs an action of the Catholic priest at the altar with a matching scene from the Passion of Christ, depicted in the background altar paintings. Starting from the top left, we see the priest approaching the altar (*Le Prêtre va à l’Autel*), aligned with Christ going to the Mount of Olives. To the right, the priest begins the Mass (*Le Prêtre commence la Messe*), matched with Christ appearing before the tribunal. Other scenes include the Confiteor, the priest kissing the altar, the reading of the Epistle, and the singing of the Kyrie, all aligned with episodes of betrayal, trial, and suffering from Christ’s final hours. What makes this print especially engaging is its instructional value. Intended to educate and edify both clergy and laity, it visualizes the Mass not as a set of rote rituals, but as a spiritual reenactment of the Passion. The visual parallels—such as a priest bowing in contrition beside an image of Christ being scourged—help to reinforce the theological significance of each step in the liturgy. Engraved with precision and clarity, the figures are formally posed, yet expressive, and the architectural settings and religious paintings behind each altar add depth and richness to the scenes. This work is emblematic of Enlightenment-era religious scholarship, where documentation and devotion intersect. Condition report: Good condition. The print has a strong plate impression and clear, detailed imagery. There is light foxing and marginal toning, especially along the right edge. The sheet is complete with wide margins and no visible tears or repairs. Framing suggestions: This composition works beautifully in a rectangular vertical frame, ideally with a soft ivory or cream-colored archival mat that separates the nine panels evenly. A classic dark wood or black frame will provide an elegant contrast to the light, detailed engraving. UV-protective glazing is recommended to preserve the integrity of the paper and linework. A float mount is also suitable if you wish to showcase the deckled edges and plate mark for a more historic presentation.

“The Restaurant of the House of Representatives” Engraving by Harper's Weekly
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This original wood engraving is titled “The Restaurant of the House of Representatives, Washington, DC.” It was published as a double-page image, in the August 12, 1893 issue of the famous 19th century newspaper Harper’s Weekly. The print was illustrated by Charles Stanley Reinhardt. The House Restaurant, a unique part of life in the Capitol, has been in the same location since the 1857 Capitol Expansion. Congressional members’ busy work schedule made the availability of food on site a necessity. But the restaurant also served as an informal meeting spot for members to continue conversations and deal making. This 1893 print illustrates the convivial atmosphere. Details including elegantly dressed tables...
