The Ceremonies of the Low Mass – Complete Engraved Cycle in Three Plates, 1734

About the Item

The Ceremonies of the Low Mass – Complete 18th-Century Engraved Cycle in Three Plates This rare and beautifully preserved set of three 18th-century copperplate engravings forms a complete visual cycle titled Les Cérémonies des Petites Messes (“The Ceremonies of the Low Mass”), drawn from the influential publication *Les Cérémonies et Coutumes Religieuses de Tous les Peuples du Monde* (1734). These prints meticulously depict the sequence of a Catholic Low Mass in 35 illustrated vignettes, each aligned with a corresponding moment from the Passion of Jesus Christ, creating a profound liturgical and devotional parallel. The engravings are arranged in a structured grid, with each panel showing a priest performing a step of the Latin Mass—such as approaching the altar, reading the Epistle, elevating the host, or reciting prayers—while above or beside him, a detailed religious tableau illustrates an episode from Christ's Passion. These pairings were designed to help worshippers and clergy meditate on the spiritual significance of each liturgical act. The first plate introduces the structure and symbolism of the Mass, with scenes including the Confiteor, the Kyrie Eleison, and the priest’s kiss of the altar. The second sheet transitions into the offering and consecration, including the elevation of the Host and Chalice. The third plate culminates with the Passion narrative, including Christ’s Crucifixion, His final words, and the concluding prayers of the priest. This set is more than just a liturgical guide—it’s a work of religious education, theological symbolism, and baroque artistic expression. The engravings are attributed to the workshop of Bernard Picart, renowned for combining documentary clarity with refined aesthetics. Condition: Each plate is in good condition with sharp impressions and clean detail. Minor age-related toning and light foxing are visible around the margins, but the printed areas remain crisp and unmarred. Framing suggestion: This compilation is ideal for framing as a single wide horizontal piece. Use a simple, dark wood or black frame with an archival off-white mat. The internal white spacing and outer margin already provide visual clarity, but UV-protective glazing is strongly recommended to preserve the fine line work of the engravings.
