About the Item
Chaplain of the Teutonic Order: 1791 Hand-Colored Engraving in Ceremonial Attire
This beautiful hand-colored engraving, titled "Priester des deutschen Ordens" (Chaplain of the Teutonic Order), portrays a priest in his ceremonial attire. The figure is dressed in a black cassock adorned with a white mantle featuring the iconic black cross of the Teutonic Order. He holds a small book in one hand, symbolizing his clerical duties, while the other hand rests gently on his chest, a gesture of devotion. His tri-corner hat and simple yet dignified appearance reflect the order’s religious and modest ethos.
This engraving is part of the comprehensive series "Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden," or "Illustrations of all spiritual and secular orders," published between 1779 and 1791 by Christian Friedrich Schwan in Mannheim. This collection aimed to document the costumes and traditions of European chivalric orders with great attention to historical accuracy and artistic detail.
The engraving's fine detailing and soft hand-coloring bring the chaplain's attire to life, making it an exceptional example of 18th-century costume illustration. Collectors of historical prints, religious art, or heraldic works will find this piece to be both an artistic and historical gem. Its connection to the Teutonic Order, a medieval military and religious order, adds further historical significance.
Condition Report:
Light foxing and minor toning around the edges, consistent with age. The hand-coloring remains vivid and well-preserved. Slight creasing in the margins but does not affect the image.
Framing Tip:
A soft cream or light gray acid-free mat paired with a black or gold-tone frame will beautifully complement the engraving’s religious and ceremonial theme. Consider using museum-quality UV-resistant glass to protect the vibrant hand-coloring and delicate details from fading over time. This elegant combination will enhance the engraving's historical and artistic appeal in any setting.

Hand-Colored Engraving of the Ceiling of the Church of Santa Costanza in Frame
Located in Pembroke, MA
A large, nicely-framed Italian hand-colored engraving in tones of terracotta and black (17th century, with more recent matte and frame) by Pietro Bartoli. The engraving depicts the mosaic ceiling in the church of Santa Costanza outside of Rome, which was studied by the ecclesiatical archaeologist Giovanni Ciampini. The mosaic ceiling no longer exists, but is known through various depictions of the artwork, such as this engraving. The images include Christian imagery including the sacrifice of Cain and Abel and possibly Noah building the ark. The upper row of mosaics is believed to represent scenes from the New Testament, with caryatids dividing the ceiling into twelve segments. The engraving is captioned in Latin: "Opus Musiuum olim in tholo Templi, quod vulgo creditur Bacchi, nunc Sancte Constantie extra Portam Piam cariatides, et Telamones in duodecium dividant Segmenta, ubi plura autumnales ferias, et piscationis Genium demostrant, iuxta interpretionem Ciampini qui mediatatem exhibet Veterum monum." In the 17th century, the church of Santa Costanza was known as the "Temple of Bacchus," and was the site of rowdy Bacchic festivals until Pope Clement XI banned the rites in 1720. Pietro Santo...
