About the Item

Mounted Crusader in Full Charge with Sword and Shield, circa 1400 Description This powerful hand-colored engraving, Plate No. 86 from the prestigious 1845 publication Costumes Historiques des XIIIe, XIVe et XVe Siècles, captures the full energy and symbolism of a medieval crusading knight in action. Depicted at the peak of a forward charge, this mounted warrior, clad in full armor and draped in the white surcoat bearing the iconic red cross, evokes the gallantry, religious fervor, and military might of the Crusades era. The figure sits astride a spirited warhorse, both man and beast enveloped in matching crusader livery. The horse rears up dynamically, emphasizing the movement and tension of battle. The knight’s sword is held aloft in his right hand while his left grips a tall kite shield emblazoned with the red cross of St. George or the Knights Templar. Beneath the outer garments, he wears articulated plate armor, complete with rounded pauldrons, greaves, and gauntlets, all meticulously detailed. His helmet, with no visor and clean conical shape, suggests functionality and readiness for open combat. The careful composition, with the curved sweep of the cloak, raised sword, and diagonal thrust of the horse’s body, conveys speed, strength, and unstoppable forward momentum. In contrast, the pastel-toned landscape below—rolling hills and open terrain—adds a gentle grounding that allows the red and white color scheme of the crusader to dominate the viewer’s attention. This print is ideal for collectors of medieval military art, those interested in the iconography of knighthood and crusading orders, and decorators looking for dynamic historic imagery. It makes a compelling standalone piece or a perfect visual counterpart to other prints of armor and courtly pageantry from the same series. Condition This plate is in very good condition. The colors are vibrant and the image area is clean and bright. A few faint age spots appear in the wide margins but do not affect the printed image. Plate mark is crisp and well-preserved. Framing tips This dramatic scene calls for a bold presentation. A deep mat in parchment or cream will help focus the viewer’s eye on the vibrant action. A dark wooden or antique gold frame will accentuate the historical tone and make the print suitable for display in libraries, studies, or offices. For modern interiors, a sleek black frame can also provide a powerful contrast to the medieval subject matter.

Title: Hand-Coloured Lithograph of Armoured Knight and Horse in Tournament Dress Description: This exquisite hand-coloured lithograph presents a fully armoured knight mounted on a similarly armoured horse, highlighting the grandeur of medieval tournament culture.
