About the Item

Chinese Mandarin Costume Print – Antique Hand-Colored Lithograph, 1854 This antique hand-colored lithograph, published in 1854 in Album des Voyages Anciens et Modernes by Martial Ardant Frères, depicts a Mandarin from Peking (Beijing), richly dressed in ceremonial attire. The figure is seated in state, embodying the grandeur and authority of Chinese officials during the Qing dynasty. The Mandarin wears a long purple robe adorned with intricate embroidered roundels, featuring stylized birds and dragons, symbols of rank and power. Gold detailing trims the robe, while layered garments of blue and green peek through at the hem and cuffs. His shoulders are decorated with elaborate golden dragon heads, further emphasizing his high status. On his head sits a red cap with a small upright finial, a feature of official Qing dress. He sits upright on a decorated platform, holding a tablet or insignia of office in his hand, a mark of dignity and authority. For 19th-century European audiences, Chinese officials represented both exotic sophistication and the mystery of imperial China. Costume prints such as this one captured the fascination with Eastern courts and their ceremonial splendor. The Mandarin’s attire was designed to convey not only his personal status but also the majesty of the empire he served. This lithograph, with its bold hand-applied colors and careful attention to embroidered details, conveys that impression with striking effect. Such works were more than decorative—they reflected the European imagination of China as a land of ancient traditions, strict hierarchies, and refined culture. Today, the print holds both artistic and historical value: as a decorative image of Qing ceremonial attire, and as an artifact of 19th-century European views on Asia. Condition report: Mild foxing and light toning, mostly confined to the margins. Colors remain vivid and detailed, especially in the purple robe and gold embroidery. Plate mark visible. Paper stable with wide margins. Framing tips: A black or dark wood frame with a cream mat will highlight the rich tones of the robe, while a gilt frame with a deep red or burgundy mat will echo the ceremonial grandeur of the costume. Technique: Hand-colored lithograph Maker: Martial Ardant Frères, Paris & Limoges, 1854
