Title: Christ’s Charge to Peter Engraving – John XXI Feed My Sheep c.1735 Description: This deeply moving antique engraving titled “Christ’s Charge to Peter” illustrates the moment from John Chapter XXI where the resurrected Christ commissions Peter to “feed my sheep,” establishing him as the shepherd of his followers. Created circa 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, this copperplate engraving captures Christ addressing Peter in the presence of the other disciples, symbolising his role as leader of the early Church. At the centre, Christ stands with a serene and authoritative presence, gesturing towards Peter who kneels before him in humility and devotion. The disciples stand clustered around them, their faces reflecting attentiveness, reverence, and contemplation as they witness this divine commission. In the background, a detailed pastoral landscape unfolds, with rolling hills, farmland, and a distant village with towers and smoke rising from chimneys, situating the scene within an idealised biblical setting while adding compositional depth and balance. Executed with precision using the copper engraving technique, this print features finely etched lines, cross-hatching, and intricate detailing typical of English Bible illustrations of the early 18th century.
