About the Item
CIRUELO CABRAL (Argentine, b. 1963)
Original Front Cover Illustration for The Book of the Dragon
Graphite and mixed media on artist paper
Signed lower right “ciruelo”
A striking original illustration by internationally celebrated fantasy artist Ciruelo Cabral, created for the front cover of his acclaimed volume The Book of the Dragon. Rendered in graphite with hand-applied color on fine artist paper, the piece focuses on the roaring head of an emerald-blue dragon, captured mid-snarl with its jaws open wide to reveal a fearsome array of teeth and a lashing forked tongue.
Set against a dark, moody sky with soft drifting clouds, the dragon’s intricate scales, spines, and horns are rendered with Cabral’s trademark precision and dramatic lighting, bringing a vivid three-dimensional presence to the mythical creature. This work represents one of Cabral’s most recognizable dragon portraits, reproduced internationally as the published cover for The Book of the Dragon.
An exceptional opportunity to acquire the very image that introduced countless readers to Cabral’s vision of draconic lore, offering an intimate view of the artist’s creative process and technique in its original, pre-publication form

CONSERVATION TREATMENT
—
- Selectively dry cleaned the surface of the paper with inert sponge eraser to remove atmospheric soots and soiling
found throughout.
- Separated the paper from the existing acidic top mat mechanically where attached at the edges and minimized
adhesive residue where necessary.
- Removed multiple pieces of tape around the edges of the mat and along the top edge of the artwork and
minimized adhesive residue as much as possible.
- Reduced the appearance of foxing stains with sodium borohydride.
- Humidified and relaxed the paper locally to reduce creases at the bottom edge.
- Flattened the paper generally between blotters and non-woven polyester sheets under weight to minimize mild
planar distortions throughout.
- Selectively inpainted at water stains with watercolor pencil to blend these areas with the surrounding image
cosmetically.
