About the Item
A rare depiction of same-sex affection in early 20th century art, this beautiful print was made by Josef Eberz, one of Germany's great inter-war Expressionists. Strongly influenced by Cubism and emergent Art Deco design, this print shows a male couple in the heart of a tropical paradise, complete with exotic birds and embracing palm trees. The print may have a connection to a group of illustrations that Eberz did for "Die Pole des Eros," an important and early series of gay stories written by Curt Moreck (pseudonym of Konrad Haemmerling), in 1918. (Print is not matted or framed.).

Josef Eberz born in 1880 was a German painter, graphic artist, illustrator and designer of mosaics and glass windows with a strong focus on religious topics and was one of Germany's great inter-war Expressionists. He was strongly influenced by Cubism and emergent Art Deco design. His prints have a connection to a group of illustrations that Eberz did for Die Pole des Eros, an important and early series of gay stories written by Curt Moreck (pseudonym of Konrad Haemmerling), in 1918. Works by Eberz are represented in many private and public collections, the most comprehensive holdings are in the art collections of the city of Limburg an der Lahn.
