Defeat at the Gete: The Habsburg Triumph over Orange in 1568, Published in 1632

About the Item

Very old and interesting engraving of the Eighty Years' War. The Battle of Jodoigne (or the Battle of the River Gete), which was a clash that occurred on October 20, 1568, during the early stages of the Eighty Years' War. It features the royal Habsburg army commanded by the Duke of Alba defeating the Protestant rebel army led by William of Orange. This defeat forced William of Orange to abandon his plans of invading the Habsburg Netherlands. The print is attributed to the artist Johann Wilhelm Baur and was published by Franciscus Corbelletti in Rome, dated 1632. It served as an illustration in Famiano Strada's "De bello Belgico." The Latin text above the scene provides a legend to the print, explaining various components of the battle as depicted: Battle at the Gete River under Governor Alba. 1560. A. Tillemons, a city of Brabant. B. The Gete River. C. Part of Orange's army having already crossed the river. D. Part of Orange's army crossing the river. E. The rear guard of Orange's army, engaging with the Spaniards on the bank. F. The vanguard of the Spanish army. G. Iouernalius, commander of Orange's legion, arranging the battle. H. Chiap. Vitellius pulling out the standard from the bearer's hand. I. Frederick, son of Alba, having gained the hill, having driven the enemies from there. K. Reinforcements from Alba. L. Louernalius captured. L. Count Hochstratanus wounded, and a little later died. N. Alba pursues his men to chase the enemy. O. Some of Orange's men surviving the battle. P. A tower set on fire by the Spaniards. Q. The legion of Gauls joining Orange's side. This translation provides insight into various tactical positions and movements during the battle as the forces of William of Orange faced off against the army of the Duke of Alba.

Clash at Rijmenam Engraved: A Turning Point in the Eighty Years' War, 1632
Located in Langweer, NL
Rare engraving depicting a battle in the Eighty Year' War. The Battle of Rijmenam took place on July 31, 1578, during the early stages of the Eighty Years' War. It was a conflict between the States-General of the Netherlands and the Spanish governor-general, resulting in a Spanish defeat. The forces of the States-General set up camp at Rijmenam under the overall leadership of the Count of Boussu. Their army consisted of 12,000 infantry and 7,000 cavalry. The English mercenaries were led by Sir John Norris and Sir Richard Bingham, the Scottish mercenaries by Robert Stuart, and the French Huguenots by François de la Noue. Don Juan of Austria, the Spanish commander, commanded an army of 12,000 infantry and 5,000 cavalry. He planned to attack before reinforcements from Zutphen could arrive. His subordinates, Alexander Farnese and Gabrio Serbelloni, considered this too risky, but Don Juan proceeded with his plan and launched an early morning attack on July 31. He attempted to draw Boussu out for an open field battle, but Boussu stayed behind the dug trenches. After three hours of waiting, Don Juan ordered a company of musketeers under Alonso de Leyva and three groups of cuirassiers under the Marquis del Monte to stage a feigned attack on the village's rear. In response, Boussu sent Norris to confront them. Following the initial skirmish, Scottish forces under Stuart and Spanish infantry under Fernando Álvarez de Toledo...
