About the Item

Depiction of Persian Houses – 18th-Century Architectural Scene by J. van der Schley, 1731 This finely executed antique engraving titled Afbeelding van de Persiansche Huizen (“Depiction of the Persian Houses”) offers a detailed and atmospheric view of domestic architecture in Persia during the mid-18th century. The scene is framed by tall trees and enclosed gardens, showing Persian figures in traditional dress conversing in the foreground, while a variety of domed and flat-roofed structures emerge behind high walls. Engraved by the accomplished Dutch printmaker Jakob van der Schley, this plate was published in 1754 as part of a Dutch edition of La galerie agréable du monde, a large geographical and ethnographic work. Van der Schley was known for translating the travel narratives of authors like Jean-Baptiste Tavernier and Cornelis de Bruijn into detailed and accurate visual representations. The architecture here reflects the typical residential features of Persian cities: high compound walls for privacy, shaded courtyards, arched entrances, and simple yet elegant construction adapted to climate and custom. Not only does this print serve as a historical record of Persian urban life, but it also captures the Enlightenment-era European fascination with the East. The figures’ dress, the presence of water features, trees, and flat streets all add to the sense of place, offering insight into the lived experience and urban organization of the time. This print would appeal to collectors interested in Islamic architecture, travel illustration, or 18th-century Dutch engraving. It is both decorative and documentary, offering a blend of fine artistic quality and ethnographic observation. Condition: Very good impression with strong lines and minimal age toning. Some slight creasing along the vertical fold, as issued. Margins intact, paper clean, no tears or losses. Framing tips: Best presented in a dark wood or ebony frame with a warm off-white or cream mount to accentuate the architectural forms and foreground figures. Technique: Copper engraving Maker: Jakob van der Schley, Amsterdam, 1731
