"Expressionist Cafe, " Rare Print from Weimar Germany by Eberz
About the Item
One of Germany's great inter-war expressionists, strongly influenced by Cubism, Josef Eberz painted a number of brilliantly hued, high energy paintings as well as a series of prints and lithographs. This depiction of a quiet cafe scene, energized by the strong angles of the ceiling and the diagonal lines of the three cafe sitters, is a very fine and rare example of his work. The print may have a connection to a group of illustrations that Eberz did for "Die Pole des Eros," an important and early series of gay stories written by Curt Moreck (pseudonym of Konard Haemmerling), in 1918.
