About the Item

Francois Nicholas Martinet bird engraving, circa 1770. The framed Francois Martinet engraving is from Buffon's Historie Naturelle des Oiseaux displaed beautifully in a large frame. Dimensions: 21 3/4 inches high x 13 inches wide x 3/4 inches deep (sight: 10 inches x 8 1/4 inches). Over the course of his illustrious career, François Nicolas Martinet (1731-1790?) engrved illustrations of birds for some of the most influential naturalists in 18th-century France, including François Salèrne, Mathurin Brisson, and, above all, Georges Louis Leclerc, le comte de Buffon. This exceptional, hand-colored engraving is from Georges Louis Leclerc Comte de Buffon's work Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux . The work was published in Paris from 1770 to 1786. Francois Nicolas Martinet provided all of the illustrations for the work. Histoire Naturelle was the most comprehensive and noted ornithological work of the 1700s. It included a broad variety of birds native to Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Martinet was one of the greatest birds artists of the 18th century. He worked for the French court as an engraver and artist. Martinet's illustrations are accurate and beautifully artistic. Comte de Buffon was a respected naturalist and scientist. Buffon dared to challenge religious thought decades before Darwin. He suggested the Earth was older than 6,000 years and the common ancestry of apes and humans.

Antique engraving of a Tucano Mangiapepe, by Saverio Manetti Circa 1776 A fine hand colored engraving of a Tuscan Magpie by the Italian artist Saverio Manetti. Dimensions: 25 inches high x 22 inches wide x 1 1/4 inches deep. (frame); (63.5cm high x 55.88cm). 18 x 14 in. (sheet) Reference: Wikipedia Manetti was born in Brozzi to Giovanni Bernardo and Maria Teresa Nesiscolt of Prague. In 1758 he joined the National Medical College where he studied anatomy under Antonio Cocchi (1695–1758), conducting the autopsy of Cocchi. Manetti was Professor of Botany of the "Società Botanica Fiorentina", a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, a Fellow of the Royal Society, learned societies in Göttingen and Montpellier, an Accademico dell'Istituto di Bologna and he maintained scientific contacts with the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus and with the main scientific circles of the second half of the 18th century. With remarkable organizational effort, he secured the publication of Storia naturale degli uccelli, Natural History of the birds, a monumental work in five volumes illustrated with 600 hand-coloured engravings based on watercolor paintings. The book was commissioned by Maria Luisa, Grand duchess of Tuscany and the first volume was dedicated to Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo. The third volume was dedicated to Ferdinando di Brobone and the fourth to Giorgio Nassau Clavering. Antique Bird Print of the Certhia by Sepp & Nozeman, 1770
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique print titled 'Certhia'. This print depicts certhia with nest and eggs (Dutch: Boomkruipertje). Certhia is the genus of birds containing the typical treecreepers, which together with the African and Indian spotted creepers make up the family Certhiidae. The treecreepers are small woodland birds, very similar in appearance (so they can present serious identification problems where two species occur together). They are brown with streaks above and white below. They have thin pointed down-curved bills, which they use to extricate insects from bark. They have stiff, pointed tail feathers, like woodpeckers and woodcreepers, which they use to support themselves on vertical trees...
