The artist is Franz (Friedrich) Sturm, as noted by the inscription at the bottom, "Fr. Sturm ex nat. pinx. et sc. 1830," which means that he painted and engraved this illustration from nature in 1830. The puffin, known for its distinctive colorful beak and black-and-white plumage, is depicted standing on a rock by the sea, its typical habitat. The additional detail sketches above the main figure likely represent close-up studies of the bird’s bill and its internal structure, indicating Sturm’s interest in providing scientific details in his natural history illustrations. More About the Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica): - Habitat: Atlantic puffins are seabirds native to the cold coastal regions of the North Atlantic. They breed on rocky cliffs and islands and spend most of their lives at sea. - Diet: Puffins primarily feed on small fish, such as sand eels, which they catch by diving into the water and using their wings to swim. - Appearance: Puffins are well known for their colorful beaks, which become especially vibrant during the breeding season. Outside of breeding, the beak colors dull somewhat. - Behavior: These birds are excellent swimmers and divers, using their wings to "fly" underwater. They are also strong fliers in the air, despite their somewhat clumsy appearance when walking on land. The Latin name *Fratercula* means "little brother," possibly due to the bird’s black-and-white plumage resembling monastic robes. Their burrowing habits for nesting also contribute to their unique identity among seabirds.
