French Napoleon III Engraving “Battle of Marengo” by Jacques-Joseph Coiny

About the Item

Exceptional and unique engraving made by the engraver Jacques-Joseph Coiny, after the painting by Louis-François Lejeune on the Battle of Marengo (1800). Louis-François Lejeune was a French general, painter and lithographer, veteran of the Napoleonic Wars. He took part in numerous campaigns of Napoleon, which he used as motifs in his work. In the lower area, the coat of arms of the First French Empire appears. It depicts in detail the battle that took place on June 14, 1800 in Marengo, in northern Italy, in which Napoleon Bonaparte and the French army of the Republic defeated the army of the Austrian Habsburgs under the command of Field Marshal Peter Karl Ott von Batorkez. The battle was part of the Second Coalition, in which several European powers, including Austria, Russia and Britain, united to confront France, which was under the leadership of Napoleon Bonaparte. Marengo was Napoleon's great victory in Italy and the first in his race for domination of Europe. After taking power through a coup d'état, he crossed the Alps to confront Austria in Italy. Just six months earlier, the Corsican military man had staged a coup d'état and become First Consul. Upon his return victorious, he gained unprecedented popularity and was able to focus on internal French reforms, something that was made possible by the peace he signed with Austria through the Treaty of Lunéville in January 1801, which lasted until 1804, when, already crowned Emperor, he launched his great campaigns of conquest in Europe. Ultimately, the Battle of Marengo was a key triumph for Napoleon, solidifying his military reputation and helping to consolidate French rule in Italy. It has a gorgeous lemongrass great frame .
