About the Item

The engraving by D. Beauvais, part of the "Recueil de XC Têtes" series, presents a compelling juxtaposition of two heads: an elder, bearded man on the left, and a youthful, cherubic face on the right. The bearded man is depicted in profile, with a gaze that might be described as forward-looking or contemplative, his features marked by the passage of time. His hair and beard are rendered with meticulous, flowing lines that suggest both strength and wisdom. In contrast, the child's visage, with its soft, rounded cheeks and curly hair, embodies innocence and youth. The cherubic figure looks upward, a common Renaissance motif to depict admiration or divine inspiration. The inscription "Raph. Urb. pin." on the bottom left affirms that the original design was by Raphael Sanzio from Urbino. "D. Beauvais sculp." on the bottom right indicates that D. Beauvais executed this particular engraving. As part of the project headed by Sir Nicolas Dorigny, Beauvais, along with other engravers, was tasked with translating Raphael's cartoons into engravings. These works were then published by J. Boydell in London, making the masterpieces of Raphael accessible to those beyond the walls of Hampton Court. This piece reflects the Renaissance's deep interest in human emotion and the exploration of different stages of life, from the vigor of youth to the gravity of maturity. The collaboration between Beauvais and Dorigny underlines the period's collective approach to art creation and distribution, celebrating the shared contributions that have allowed such art to endure through the centuries.
