About the Item
A modern lithograph in color on paper titled “Ost-West Transit Series IV” by German artist Georg Karl Pfahler. Hand signed in pencil and annotated 35/110 on the verso. Published in 1971. In the early 1960s, Pfahler was the sole representative of “Hard-Edge Painting” in Europe while simultaneously his contemporaries in America (Frank Stella, Ellsworth Kelly, and Kenneth Noland) were also exploring this painting style. The compositions are an investigation of the relationship between color, shape and space which is represented in this composition.
Provenance: London Arts Group, Detroit. Dimensions: 27.5”h x 27.5”w (unframed). In very good vintage condition. Full condition reports are available upon request.
Georg Karl Pfahler (1926-2002) was a German painter, printmaker and sculptor, and one of the leading proponents of post-war art in Germany. Since 1965 realized numerous architectural projects, which have been a substantial contribution towards the development to art in architecture and public spaces in post-war Germany. Amongst Thomas Lenk, Heinz Mack and Günther Uecker, Pfahler was chosen to provide the German pavilion to the Venice Biennale in 1970 and in 1981 he was chosen to represent German art at the Sao Paulo Biennale. Today Pfahler is represented in several important private and public collections around the world.

Georg Karl Pfahler
Georg Karl Pfahler (1926–2002) was a pioneering German artist renowned for his contributions to Hard-Edge painting and Color Field movements. Born in Emetzheim, Germany, he studied under Willi Baumeister at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart, graduating in 1954. Initially influenced by Art Informel, Pfahler's work evolved in the early 1960s towards sharply defined geometric forms and vibrant color contrasts, establishing him as a leading figure in European abstract art. His dedication to exploring the interplay between color, shape, and space distinguished his artistic approach.
Pfahler's international acclaim includes representing Germany at the 35th Venice Biennale in 1970 alongside artists like Günther Uecker and Heinz Mack, and participating in the 16th São Paulo Biennial in 1981. His works have been exhibited globally, with notable retrospectives such as "Color and Space" at QG Gallery in Brussels in 2019. Beyond painting, Pfahler contributed to architectural projects, integrating art into public spaces in post-war Germany. He also held teaching positions, including a tenure at the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg from 1984 to 1992, influencing a new generation of artists.

Georg Karl Pfahler is considered the only important representative of the Hard Edge in Germany; he was a guest at the Biennales in Venice and São Paolo, taught in Nuremberg and Salzburg and was awarded numerous prizes.
Georg Karl Pfahler was born on October 8, 1926 in Emetzheim, Bavaria. He spent his childhood and youth on his parents' farm, far away from any art. Nevertheless, he loved painting and drawing from an early age and cultivated it intensively as a childhood pastime. However, Georg Karl Pfahler only received the impetus to study art in 1948 when he met students from the Nuremberg Art Academy and accepted their invitation. His parents, good but simple country folk, had no interest in their son's newly awakened passion, and the young man was also met with incomprehension in his home village. However, Georg Karl Pfahler did not let this put him off, but attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg for two years, where he came into contact with original art for the first time and became acquainted with the works of Marc Chagall and Paul Klee.
