Giovanni Battista Cavalieri 'D.1597', Rare Dance of Death, Ars Moriendi

About the Item

This extremely rare engraving was produced by Cavalieri as an extraneous allegorical unnumbered plate in the second edition of Cirgignani’s Ecclesiae militantis triumphi; sive, Deo amabilium martyrum gloriosa pro Christi fide certamina. Title within the plate below the image “Sic et per unius iustitiam in omnes Homines in justifactionem vitae. RO. C. V.” Printed on fine laid paper. Sheet: 26 x 18.8 cm From the second edition of the seriesof 1583. First State if this engraving. Harvard/Mortimer-Italian 126. Giovanni Battista de' Cavalieri was an engraver, printer and print publisher, from Villa Lagarina near Trento. Active in Venice and from 1559 in Rome. 1577 he had a bottega in Parione which he let out to a cartolaio, Girolamo Agnelli. His own house was in the vicolo di Palazzo Savelli, with a workshop next to it. He was the brother-in-law of Lorenzo Vaccari. After producing plates for Antonio Salamanca, Lafreri and Faleti by 1560 he seems to have been publishing his own plates. He entered into partnerships for publishing: in 1567 with Perino Zecchini de Guarlottis and in 1576 with Lorenzo Vaccari. In 1577 he was employing a printer: Francesco Cornuti.

On with your dead: & I’ll contrive to hurry this old Fool alive. Original Aquatint & Etching plate with original hand colour. Full margins and only very minor marginal wear. Rudolph Ackermann, London, 1815. Thomas Rowlandson: Along with Hogarth, Gillray and Cruikshank, Thomas Rowlandson is at the uppermost peak of English satirical art. Amongst these masters, however, Rowlandson was the most gifted artist and his compositions always seemed the closest to the truth for he often lived the dissipated style of life he so memorably satirized. Along with Hogarth, Gillray and Cruikshank, Thomas Rowlandson is at the uppermost peak of English satirical art. Amongst these masters, however, Rowlandson was the most gifted artist and his compositions always seemed the closest to the truth for he often lived the dissipated style of life he so memorably satirized. After studying in both Paris and London, Thomas Rowlandson began his career as a portrait painter. By 1782, however, he devoted himself almost exclusively to his first love; caricature and satirical art. After receiving a large inheritance, Thomas Rowlandson quickly gambled it away. After losing his fortune at a thirty-six hour card game he is known to have exclaimed, "I've played the fool, but (holding up his pencils) here is my resource." Working with such British publishers as Flores and Thomas Tegg, Thomas Rowlandson designed many memorable satires. His greatest work, however, lay ahead in the early nineteenth century when he collaborated with the famous London publisher, Rudolph Ackermann, to produce some of the finest satirical series in the history of art. These included The Microcosm of London (1808), the Tour of Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque (1812) and The English Dance of Death...
