About the Item

Golden Pear Cluster – “Peer var. Eyewood” Botanical Print, Dutch, ca. 1870 Chromolitho Elegant antique chromolithograph depicting the Eyewood pear (*Peer var. Eyewood*), a richly colored variety shown in a cluster of five golden, speckled fruits hanging from leafy branches. This botanical print is Plate 63 from a celebrated 19th-century Dutch pomological series dedicated to the finest varieties of pears and apples cultivated in the Netherlands. Drawn by A. J. Wendel and printed in chromolithography by G. Severeyns of Brussels, this work showcases the exceptional detail and color precision characteristic of Severeyns’ workshop. Commissioned under the direction of botanist J. F. Schouw, the series was intended for both scientific reference and visual delight, and remains one of the finest fruit publications produced in Europe during the 19th century. The Eyewood pear is rendered here with botanical accuracy and decorative appeal. The fruits are round and heavily speckled, their stems thick and slightly curved, and the foliage dense with naturalistic shading. The plate originally formed part of *Pomologia: Beschrijving en afbeelding der beste soorten van appels en peeren, in Nederland gekweekt*, published between 1868 and 1875. This lavish work was issued in parts and is now rare and prized among collectors of botanical art and pomological history. Condition: Very good. Strong, clean colors with no foxing, tears, or discoloration. The print is professionally mounted under a warm cream mat with a fine grey accent line and is ready for framing. Framing tips: A warm-toned wooden frame in walnut or oak complements the golden hues of the fruit. For a more refined presentation, a soft gilt frame with natural linen slip would suit the delicate botanical style. Use museum glass for preservation. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: A. J. Wendel (artist), G. Severeyns (printer), Brussels, c. 1870
