Grand Master of the Teutonic Order: 1791 Colored Engraving in Ceremonial Robes

About the Item

Grand Master of the Teutonic Order: 1791 Hand-Colored Engraving in Ceremonial Robes This exquisite hand-colored engraving, titled "Hochmeister des deutschen Ordens" (Grand Master of the Teutonic Order), showcases the ceremonial attire of the Order’s leader. The Grand Master is depicted in an opulent ensemble, wearing a red and blue embroidered coat beneath a white ceremonial mantle adorned with the iconic black cross of the Teutonic Order. His confident stance, with one hand extended and the other resting near his sword, conveys both authority and chivalric honor. This artwork is part of Christian Friedrich Schwan’s acclaimed series, "Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden," or "Illustrations of all spiritual and secular orders," published in Mannheim between 1779 and 1791. The series provides a detailed visual account of the ceremonial dress of European knightly orders, reflecting the grandeur and traditions of these institutions. The Teutonic Order, established during the Crusades, was a Catholic military and religious order renowned for its significant role in medieval European history. The engraving’s vibrant hand-coloring enhances the intricate details of the Grand Master’s attire, making it an excellent collector’s piece for enthusiasts of heraldry, historical costume, or medieval chivalric orders. It serves as a beautiful representation of the pageantry and historical significance of the Teutonic Order. Condition Report Minor foxing and light toning around the margins, consistent with age. The hand-coloring is vivid and well-preserved. Light wrinkles do not detract from the overall image. Framing Tip Enhance the engraving's regal aesthetic with a cream or light gold acid-free mat and a gilded or dark wood frame. UV-resistant glass will protect the vibrant hand-coloring and preserve the fine details. This piece will make a stunning addition to any historical collection or formal display.

Hand-Colored Engraving of the Ceiling of the Church of Santa Costanza in Frame
Located in Pembroke, MA
A large, nicely-framed Italian hand-colored engraving in tones of terracotta and black (17th century, with more recent matte and frame) by Pietro Bartoli. The engraving depicts the mosaic ceiling in the church of Santa Costanza outside of Rome, which was studied by the ecclesiatical archaeologist Giovanni Ciampini. The mosaic ceiling no longer exists, but is known through various depictions of the artwork, such as this engraving. The images include Christian imagery including the sacrifice of Cain and Abel and possibly Noah building the ark. The upper row of mosaics is believed to represent scenes from the New Testament, with caryatids dividing the ceiling into twelve segments. The engraving is captioned in Latin: "Opus Musiuum olim in tholo Templi, quod vulgo creditur Bacchi, nunc Sancte Constantie extra Portam Piam cariatides, et Telamones in duodecium dividant Segmenta, ubi plura autumnales ferias, et piscationis Genium demostrant, iuxta interpretionem Ciampini qui mediatatem exhibet Veterum monum." In the 17th century, the church of Santa Costanza was known as the "Temple of Bacchus," and was the site of rowdy Bacchic festivals until Pope Clement XI banned the rites in 1720. Pietro Santo...
