Habit of the Marchioness of Belfont, Daughter of the Duke of Mazarine, ca. 1757
About the Item
This original engraving depicts a woman and a young black boy from the 18th century, and was published between the years 1757 and 1772, likely in 1757.
The woman is identified as the Marchioness of Belfont, daughter of the Duke of Mazarine, in the year 1700. She is dressed in an elaborate costume that reflects the high fashion of the aristocracy in the early 1700s. Her attire is quite ornate, with a dress that has multiple layers, ribbons, and ruffles, predominantly in pink and black with hints of green and yellow at the hem. She is wearing a tall, decorated headdress, which was characteristic of the time. The young boy beside her is dressed in a less extravagant, yet still richly decorated outfit, with a blue coat, a yellow waistcoat, and red stockings, topped with a turban-style hat adorned with a feather. In the 17th and 18th centuries Black domestic servants in great houses were often seen as a conspicuous sign of wealth. Some were paid wages and could leave their employers, while others were treated as property. Portraits and inventories in great houses record many such lives.
The place of issue is London, and the publisher is T. Jefferys, known for their work in the mid-18th century. This suggests that the image is most likely an engraving that was made to illustrate the fashions of the upper classes of the past century to a contemporary audience. The text on the image is a mix of English and French, which indicates that the target audience might have been bilingual or that the publishers catered to both English and French-speaking clientele. The hand-coloring is original and likely made in the year it was published.

- Habit of a Lady of Quality in France in a Hand-Colored Engraving, 1757Located in Langweer, NLAn original antique hand-colored print of a woman in an elaborate dress, which is described as the "Habit of a Lady of Quality in France." This suggests that the attire represented is that of an affluent or noble woman from France, possibly from the 18th century given the style of the dress and the method of printmaking. The woman is wearing a headdress, which also fits with the fashion of the European upper class of the period. - Philippe le Bon or The Good, Duke of Burgundy: The Duke's Prestige, 1847Located in Langweer, NLTitle: "Philippe le Bon: The Duke's Prestige" Description: The print showcases Philippe le Bon, also known as Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, standing in a dignified pose that conveys authority and nobility. He was known for his patronage of the arts and the opulence of his court, and this is reflected in the intricate detail of his attire. Philippe is dressed in a doublet with a patterned design, possibly embroidered with gold thread, which would have been a symbol of wealth and status during his time. The garment fits snugly to his form, a style that was fashionable among the nobility in the 15th century. The lower part of the doublet extends into a skirt, which is edged with fur, adding to the luxuriousness of his ensemble. He wears hose that fit tightly to his legs, a common fashion of the time, which are practical for riding and daily activities of a nobleman. His shoes are pointed, following the style of the Burgundian court. On his head, Philippe sports a chaperon, a type of headgear that was popular among men of rank. The chaperon features a rolled brim and an extended tail, known as a 'liripipe', which adds a distinctive flair to his profile. Around his neck, he has a chain, from which hangs a badge or medallion, denoting his high rank and perhaps an order of chivalry. His right hand rests on the hilt of a dagger, hinting at the martial aspect of his role as a duke and the necessity for self...Category
