Habit of the Lady Mayoress of London in 1640, Published in 1757

About the Item

This is a hand-colored atnique print, this time depicting the "Habit of the Lady Mayoress of London, in 1640." It's a historical costume illustration showing the fashion of a high-ranking lady in London during the early 17th century. The lady is dressed in a gown with a wide, flowing skirt, which appears to be made of a luxurious fabric, possibly silk, given the sheen illustrated. She wears a bodice with a contrasting color, and the sleeves have a slashed design that was popular during that time, allowing the fabric underneath to show through. Over her shoulders is a ruff, a starched, pleated collar that was a fashion statement in the 16th and early 17th centuries. The costume is completed with a broad-brimmed hat adorned with what appears to be feathers or a ribbon. This type of illustration would have been of particular interest to historians, costume designers, and enthusiasts of period fashion, as it provides a detailed look at the garments and accessories worn by women of status during that era. The care taken in hand-coloring the print would have helped to bring the illustration to life, offering a vibrant glimpse into the past. The place of issue is London, and the publisher is T. Jefferys, known for their work in the mid-18th century. This suggests that the image is most likely an engraving that was made to illustrate the fashions of the upper classes of the past century to a contemporary audience. The text on the image is a mix of English and French, which indicates that the target audience might have been bilingual or that the publishers catered to both English and French-speaking clientele. The hand-coloring is original and likely made in the year it was published.

  • Habit of a Lady of Quality in France in a Hand-Colored Engraving, 1757
    Located in Langweer, NL
An original antique hand-colored print of a woman in an elaborate dress, which is described as the "Habit of a Lady of Quality in France." This suggests that the attire represented is that of an affluent or noble woman from France, possibly from the 18th century given the style of the dress and the method of printmaking. The dress itself features a rich blue gown with gold accents and what appears to be an underskirt or petticoat of a contrasting color, potentially gold or yellow. The woman is wearing a headdress, which also fits with the fashion of the European upper class of the period. Such prints were often part of fashion plates or costume books that depicted the latest styles and were used by tailors, dressmakers, and the fashion-conscious elite to stay up-to-date with the latest trends from various European courts and cities. It's a detailed representation of historical clothing...

  • 17th Century Etchingn "Adoration of the Magi" by Pietro Testa, circa 1640
    By Pietro Testa
    Located in Cagliari, IT
Beautiful etching representing the classic religious subject of the "Adoration of the Magi" by the Baroque painter and engraver Pietro Testa known as il Lucchesino. The print derives from an oil on canvas of the same name now in Montpelier. Identified by the TPL monogram on the right and the dedication signature. Paolo Bellini in the book "L'opera incisa di Pietro Testa" (The engraving work of Pietro Testa) ,published in 1976 by Neri Pozza in Vicenza, identifies this work as an example of the third state of three since, respect to the second state, the address of Gio Giacomo Rossi is added . In the lower margin there is the dedication in Latin to: Most illustrious and most reverend (cardinal) Gerolamo Bonvisi, Cleric of the Apostolic Chamber, D.D. The star on the left often blushes with the light of evil / Kings live here so that they recognize the Lord, / happy face good star shines benignly./ Petrus Testa Pietro Testa (1611–1650) was an Italian High Baroque artist active in Rome. He is best known as a printmaker and draftsman. He was born in Lucca, and thus is sometimes called il Lucchesino. He moved to Rome early in life. One source states he was ejected from the Cortona studio in 1631, soon after joining the workshop. Others state Testa trained under Pietro Paolini or under Domenichino, for whom he worked under the patronage of Cassiano dal Pozzo. He was friends with Nicolas Poussin and Francesco Mola. Some of his etchings, which often include work in drypoint, have a fantastic quality reminiscent of Jacques Callot, or embellishments of his Genoese contemporary Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione and even presciently suggest William Blake. His Sacrifice of Iphigenia appears to have influenced Tiepolo's rendition at Villa Valmarana Ai Nani in Vicenza. His early prints, from the 1630s, were often religious and were influenced by Federico Barocci...
