About the Item

Monumenta Historica Antiquarian section: Category 18th century, Topography Framed perspective of the 18th century wintery diversions on the East side of The Hague. Engraved colored copperengraving (310 x 437 mm.appr. ) depicting a winterview by Hendrik Florisz. Scheurleer, 1757. Titled: Winter Gezicht van 'Gravenhage or Vuë d'Hyver de la Haye. Oak frame: 44 x 30 cm. This attractive engraving offers a general inside view on the typical Dutch wintery diversions of the 18th century, more particularly the population of The Hague, in that time the chicest city of the Dutch Republic, the city of the many residences and city-mansions from diplomates and noblemen. On the left the churchtowers from Delft. In the distance the skyline of The Hague, in this way a rare and topographically interesting perspective on the city of The Hague from the frozen river. dedicated to: Wel Edele Gestrengen Heer Mr. Jacob Willm Dallens, Balliuw en Schout van Monster en Onderhoorige Plaatse &.&. 1757 by Hendrik Florisz. Scheurleer. In the middlle between the Dutch and French title the crest of Holland with a standing and crowned lion. When the ice was strong enough the distinguished people of the city showed themselves and arrived gliding and riding over the thick crust of ice in their horsedrawn sleighs and carriages with the sound of jingle bells of their steaming horses. Remarkable are: The many horse-drawn sleighs, the two white stands, with flagpoles flying the Red White Blue (Dutch) flag, selling hot milk, drinks and cakes, the clothes of ditinguished men and women, further notice the men and women skating and the men or boys playing their favourite game of golf. In short an attractive 18th century view with the typical Dutch wintery diversions that remains captivating or fascinating.
