Hand-Colored Engraving of Hummingbirds and Dormouse by Seligmann, ca.1770

About the Item

Title: Der Kolibri mit rother Brust, der Kolibri mit grüner Brust, und der Siebenschläfer - Hand-Colored Engraving of Hummingbirds and Dormouse by Johann Michael Seligmann, 18th Century This rare hand-colored engraving, titled *Der Kolibri mit rother Brust, der Kolibri mit grüner Brust, und der Siebenschläfer*, features two vibrantly colored hummingbirds perched on a branch alongside a dormouse on the forest floor. Part of Johann Michael Seligmann’s renowned *Sammlung verschiedener ausländischer und seltener Vögel* (Collection of Various Foreign and Rare Birds), this artwork exemplifies Seligmann's skill in blending scientific precision with artistic detail, adapted from the works of notable naturalists such as George Edwards. The plate, numbered "Tab. LVI," captures the striking contrast between the red-throated and green-throated hummingbirds (*Mellivora pectore rubro* and *Mellivora gutture viridi*), set amidst a lush natural background, while the dormouse (*Mus Avellanatarum minor*) is illustrated foraging below. The delicate hand-coloring enhances the lively hues of the birds’ plumage and the rich texture of the surroundings. Latin and French inscriptions, including *Le Colibri gorge rouge, Le Colibri gorge verte, et le Loir*, add historical and scientific context. This print is perfect for collectors of antique ornithological art or enthusiasts of 18th-century natural history illustrations. Seligmann's engravings are highly valued for their aesthetic appeal and dedication to accuracy, making this piece a fascinating addition to any collection focused on vintage bird and animal prints.
