A Hand-Colored Illustration of the Snow Leopard or Once, 1824
About the Item
This engraving is a detailed depiction of a snow leopard, also known as an ounce (Panthera uncia). It shows the animal in a profile view, allowing for a clear observation of its physical characteristics, such as the thick fur, powerful build, and the distinctive rosette pattern on its coat. The meticulous detailing suggests the leopard's dense, spotted fur and musculature, conveying a sense of the animal's grace and strength.
The print is titled "The Once," an archaic term for the snow leopard. It notes the scientific name "F. O. Uncia" below the title, which refers to the older classification of the snow leopard. The illustration captures the elusive nature of the animal in a static yet lifelike pose, emphasizing its solitary and majestic presence.
This particular print was engraved by Thomas Landseer, who was renowned for his skill in the art of engraving. The original drawing was made by Charles Hamilton Smith, an artist known for his work in natural history illustration, from a specimen skin in the Tower of London. Such a source indicates that the animal was not observed in the wild but rather from a collected skin, which was common practice at the time for studying exotic animals not native to Europe.
Published by G. & W.B. Whittaker in London around the year 1824, this work is a fine example of early 19th-century natural history illustration. Hand coloring adds a layer of visual depth and aesthetic appeal to the print, making it not only a valuable scientific record but also a piece of art. It reflects the period's dedication to documenting and understanding the natural world in an era of exploration and discovery.

Hand-Colored Antique Illustrations of Various Rodent-like Animals, circa 1820
Located in Langweer, NL
Original antique print of mouse species / mice and other rodents. This engraved print originates from a very rare unknown Dutch work. The plates are similar to the plates in the famous German work: ‘Bilderbuch fur Kinder' by F.J. Bertuch, published 1790-1830 in Weimar. This could be Dutch edition of this work (no references found), or a work that used the Bertuch plates. Published circa 1820.
This engraving described in more detail:
The print features six illustrations of various rodent-like animals. They are not all mice; they represent a range of rodent species, which can be inferred from their different physical characteristics:
1. The largest animal at the top left looks like a type of pika or a chinchilla due to its rounded ears and body shape.
2. The second illustration on the top right is a curled-up animal, which might be a dormouse based on its compact body and fur texture.
3. The animal at the center-right with prominent ears and elongated body could be a type of rat or a gerbil.
4. The creature in the middle left with large hind legs and long ears appears to be a jerboa, which is known for its distinctive jumping movement.
5. The bottom left animal resembles a vole...

Hand-Colored Engraving of the Ceiling of the Church of Santa Costanza in Frame
Located in Pembroke, MA
A large, nicely-framed Italian hand-colored engraving in tones of terracotta and black (17th century, with more recent matte and frame) by Pietro Bartoli. The engraving depicts the mosaic ceiling in the church of Santa Costanza outside of Rome, which was studied by the ecclesiatical archaeologist Giovanni Ciampini. The mosaic ceiling no longer exists, but is known through various depictions of the artwork, such as this engraving. The images include Christian imagery including the sacrifice of Cain and Abel and possibly Noah building the ark. The upper row of mosaics is believed to represent scenes from the New Testament, with caryatids dividing the ceiling into twelve segments. The engraving is captioned in Latin: "Opus Musiuum olim in tholo Templi, quod vulgo creditur Bacchi, nunc Sancte Constantie extra Portam Piam cariatides, et Telamones in duodecium dividant Segmenta, ubi plura autumnales ferias, et piscationis Genium demostrant, iuxta interpretionem Ciampini qui mediatatem exhibet Veterum monum." In the 17th century, the church of Santa Costanza was known as the "Temple of Bacchus," and was the site of rowdy Bacchic festivals until Pope Clement XI banned the rites in 1720. Pietro Santo...
