Hand-Colored Ornithological Illustration of the Palawan Peacock-Pheasant, 1838

About the Item

An original illustration of the Palawan Peacock-Pheasant (Polyplectron napoleonis) from the "Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées d'oiseaux" dated 1838 by Nicolas Huet and Jean Gabriel Prêtre. The Palawan Peacock-Pheasant (Polyplectron napoleonis) was named by the French naturalist and ornithologist Charles Lucien Bonaparte. Bonaparte named the species in honor of his cousin, Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Charles Lucien Bonaparte was a notable figure in the field of ornithology, and he made significant contributions to the classification and naming of various bird species during the 19th century. The specific epithet "napoleonis" reflects this dedication to his illustrious relative. The Palawan Peacock-Pheasant (Polyplectron napoleonis) is endemic to the Philippines, specifically to the island of Palawan. This bird is found in the dense lowland forests of Palawan, where it lives in the understory and forest floor. The habitat includes primary and secondary forests, and the species is known for its elusive and secretive nature, making it challenging to observe in the wild. Conservation efforts are crucial for this species due to habitat loss and other environmental pressures. This engraving is relatively rare and potentially valuable for several reasons: 1. Historical Value: The print is from the early 19th century, making it over 180 years old. Antique prints from this era are generally considered rare and valuable, especially when they are well-preserved. 2. Artists' Renown: Nicolas Huet and Jean Gabriel Prêtre were notable artists of their time, known for their detailed and accurate depictions of wildlife. Prints by well-known and respected artists tend to be more sought after. 3. Limited Editions: Prints from this period were often produced in limited quantities. The combination of age and limited production numbers contributes to their rarity. 4. Condition: The value and rarity also depend on the condition of the print. Well-preserved prints with minimal damage, fading, or staining are rarer and more valuable. 5. Subject Matter: The Palawan Peacock-Pheasant is a striking and exotic bird, which adds to the appeal and rarity of the print.

Hand-Colored Engraving of the Ceiling of the Church of Santa Costanza in Frame
Located in Pembroke, MA
A large, nicely-framed Italian hand-colored engraving in tones of terracotta and black (17th century, with more recent matte and frame) by Pietro Bartoli. The engraving depicts the mosaic ceiling in the church of Santa Costanza outside of Rome, which was studied by the ecclesiatical archaeologist Giovanni Ciampini. The mosaic ceiling no longer exists, but is known through various depictions of the artwork, such as this engraving. The images include Christian imagery including the sacrifice of Cain and Abel and possibly Noah building the ark. The upper row of mosaics is believed to represent scenes from the New Testament, with caryatids dividing the ceiling into twelve segments. The engraving is captioned in Latin: "Opus Musiuum olim in tholo Templi, quod vulgo creditur Bacchi, nunc Sancte Constantie extra Portam Piam cariatides, et Telamones in duodecium dividant Segmenta, ubi plura autumnales ferias, et piscationis Genium demostrant, iuxta interpretionem Ciampini qui mediatatem exhibet Veterum monum." In the 17th century, the church of Santa Costanza was known as the "Temple of Bacchus," and was the site of rowdy Bacchic festivals until Pope Clement XI banned the rites in 1720. Pietro Santo...
