The print depicts Stonehenge, an iconic prehistoric monument located in Wiltshire, England.
The image is a south view of Stonehenge, featuring a detailed etching and engraving of the ancient stone circle. In the scene, various human figures and activities are included to give life and context to the monument: there's a coach parked in front of the stones, a man on horseback, and two figures in conversation to the right. Additionally, a shepherd is depicted sitting on a rock with his flock in the foreground on the left, adding a pastoral element to the landscape.
The print was made by James Heath, an engraver, after a work by Conrad Martin Metz. It was published on July 1, 1784. The print captures the grandeur and mystery of Stonehenge, while also reflecting the everyday life of the period, blending the historical with the contemporary of the time. The detailed work in the etching and engraving techniques is evident in the textures of the grass, the stones, and the dramatic sky above.
