About the Item
Hindu Festival Procession with Vishnu Cart – Engraving after Sonnerat, 1806
This antique engraving presents a detailed depiction of a Hindu religious procession featuring a large chariot carrying a statue of the deity Vishnu. The scene is full of energy and movement, with a large group of men hauling the impressive cart, while musicians and dancers lead the way. The chariot itself is shaped like a tiered temple structure, complete with ornamental roof elements, flags, and sculptural details. A figure of Vishnu is seated within the shrine, under a domed canopy supported by carved pillars, and drawn by oxen.
Titled "Fête de Térotom, ou Course du Char", this image represents a stylized version of an Indian Rath Yatra or Chariot Festival, resembling those celebrated in honor of Lord Jagannath in the city of Puri. The print comes from the work "Voyage aux Indes Orientales et à la Chine" by Pierre Sonnerat, a French naturalist, explorer and draughtsman who traveled extensively through South Asia and Southeast Asia in the late 18th century. The engraving was executed by Jean-Baptiste-Marie Poisson, a skilled French engraver known for his detailed and expressive work.
This 1806 edition reflects both European curiosity and early attempts to document and interpret Eastern cultures. Though drawn through a colonial lens, it offers insight into 18th- and early 19th-century representations of Indian religious practices as seen by Western observers. The engraving combines artistic precision with documentary interest, making it a valuable addition to collections focused on Orientalist art, historical travel prints, or religious iconography.

Chinese Funeral Procession with Palanquin – Engraving after Sonnerat, 1806
This detailed engraving titled Convoi Chinois (Chinese Procession) captures a solemn and structured funeral convoy in Qing Dynasty China. At the center of the composition, a decorated palanquin—likely a funerary sedan—rests on the shoulders of uniformed bearers as they proceed through a mountainous landscape. The structure is ornate and domed, possibly symbolizing the status or wealth of the deceased. Surrounding the palanquin is a carefully choreographed group of attendants, officials, musicians, and mourners.
To the right, ceremonial banners with trailing tassels are carried high above the procession, and numerous figures wear traditional Chinese robes and conical hats. Some appear to carry gongs or drums, indicating a ritual function. In the foreground, a man places circular offerings or markers along the path, which may be part of the ritual to guide or honor the spirit of the departed.
In the background, a rugged terrain of cliffs and hills is visible, dotted with baskets, onlookers, and structures. The left side of the image shows mourners, including a veiled woman and child, standing respectfully aside. The scene presents a harmonious blend of human order and natural setting, reinforcing the gravity of the moment and the cultural significance of funerary rites in Chinese society.
This engraving is based on sketches by French explorer Pierre Sonnerat (1745–1814), who traveled through Asia in the late 18th century. It was engraved by Jean-Baptiste-Marie Poisson (1747–1820) and published in the 1806 edition of *Voyage aux Indes Orientales et à la Chine*, a key French visual record of East Asian life and customs.
The print offers rare insight into Chinese funerary...
