Jacques Villon Cubist Original Etching, 1951, “Figure de Femme”

Jacques Villon original etching “Figure de Femme” in the Cubist Surreal style. Hand signed and numbered. Small Edition, created 1951. Edition of 30 of which this print is no. 21. Unmatted and unframed. Measures: 9 3/4" H x 7 1/2" W - image size. In excellent condition. A painter and printmaker, Jacques Villon was known for his Cubist-style works. He first came to the attention of the American public when his work was included in the 1913 New York Armory Show, which introduced modernism to the United States. All of his work sold at this exhibition. Jacques Villon was born Gaston Duchamp in 1875 in Normandy, France. He learned to engrave from his grandfather, Emile Frederic Nicolle and in the summer of 1894 he studied at L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1891 Villon, at the age of 16, executed an etching of his father Eugene Duchamp, "Portrait de Mon Pere." It was exhibited in 1953 at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and in Paris in 1959 as well as various other major museums throughout France and the United States. Jacques Villon received honors at various international exhibitions, including first prize at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh in 1950. He died on June 9, 1963, at the age of eighty-seven in Puteaux, France.
