About the Item

Created by Paul Colin, one of the artists who helped define the elegance of 1920s Paris, and in particular the rising prominence of jazz clubs which featured Josephine Baker and other Black performers, this print features a couple dancing to a modern tune with high energy, their arms and legs at acute angles which echoed the geometries of high style Art Deco form. The Black male figure is the height of fashion in his tuxedo, and the female figure is wearing a thin, diaphanous, pale green dress that is pulled up to reveal a hint of her back side. Stylized and sensual at the same time, it captures with great economy an era that came and went within a few years. The painting is ink on pale yellow paper, and is signed. (Dimensions include the black matte; the visible painting is 18 inches high by 12 inches wide.).

"Burlesque and Cubist Composition", Two-Sided Painting by William L'Engle
By William L'Engle
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Brilliant and memorable, this painting has two sides: a scene of nude burlesque dancers, ornamented in red feathers and red shoes on one side, and on the other, a highly abstract, Cubist composition in tones of taupe, wine, pale green and black. The artist was William L'Engle, and clearly he considered the Cubist composition more important, because it has a hand-painted border and is monogrammed. L'Engle was a towering figure in the Provincetown art colony, and was extremely well connected to America's artistic elite, starting with his trip to Europe as a young man with Waldo Pierce and George Biddle. Over time, William and his life Lucy became close to a wide range of important figures in painting, theater and the arts, including Charles Hawthorne, Eugene O'Neill, Gerrit Beneker, John Dos Passos, Edmund Wilson...

Ballet und Pantomime "Groteske", plate #22.
By Walter Schnackenberg
Located in Chicago, IL
Walter Schnackenberg’s style changed several times during his long and successful career. Having studied in Munich, the artist traveled often to Paris where he fell under the spell of the Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s colorful and sensuous posters depicting theatrical and decadent subjects. Schnackenberg became a regular contributor of similar compositions to the German magazines Jugend and Simplicissimus before devoting himself to the design of stage scenery and costumes. In the artist’s theatrical work, his mastery of form, ornamentation, and Orientalism became increasingly evident. He excelled at combining fluid Art Nouveau outlines, with spiky Expressionist passages, and the postures and patterns of the mysterious East. In his later years, Schnackenberg explored the unconscious, using surreal subject matter and paler colors that plainly portrayed dreams and visions, some imbued with political connotations. His drawings, illustrations, folio prints, and posters are highly sought today for their exceedingly imaginative qualities, enchanting subject matter, and arresting use of color.
